Wilderness Survival

div

The most important survival tip we can offer you is to "THINK FIRST" and learning wilderness survival skills can help you to develop a way of thinking that will keep you alive!

If you were to take the time to think about what you would do in a survival situation (such as simply becoming lost in a vast wilderness while exploring it) you could probably think of many things that you could do to help yourself out in that situation.

But understand this...If you have not trained yourself to remain calm and think, you will not be able to clearly identify what it is that you should do to get yourself out of the danger. Because simply becoming lost is an enormous danger if you are lost in a vast wilderness.

You MUST become knowledgeable about first aid and wilderness survival techniques in order to pull this one off!

I want you to know that it is not hard to develop skills that will save your life and even the lives of your family. It all depends on what you are going to do first and having a plan of action. But if you have not read any information on what it is you can do to find your way out you will be guessing and at BEST you will be lucky to find yourself out of the situation.

For all intents and purposes, unless you have found yourself (or more likely, someone else has found you) in an urgent medical situation, you will not have to worry about the first rule. Common sense, and physical urges, would tell us (such as) if we were under water, that we have less than 3 minutes to breathe.

But, in a wilderness survival setting, our first priority should be shelter. In extreme conditions, the average person needs to find shelter from the elements within 3 hours. Obviously, cold conditions are the main concern of this rule. Keep in mind that being wet or hot would also apply here. You must be sure to have adequate shelter.Should you find yourself in a survival situation, the first thing you must do is find shelter from the elements. If you have a tent, then you need to put it up. If not...construct a lean to from the natural resources you find in the surrounding area. If you need shelter immediately...find a natural rock overhang or something similar to get out of the elements. Remember, (this is very important) you have to protect yourself from hypothermia. After you have built a shelter, the next step is to make a fire. A fire will keep you warm and also help to lift your spirits.

Once you have secured shelter and fire, you should turn to water procurement. Human beings can not live beyond 3 days without water. Unless you are on a backpacking trip, you probably do not have iodine tablets or some other method of killing bacteria in water. You should look for immediate water sources. If you find them, you can boil the water for safety. Otherwise, you may to use other resources, such as making a solar still or using the evaporation method. More on these methods can be found in

"The Ultimate Survival Guide".

The final Rule of 3 is 3 weeks without food. Many survival shows or survival websites trump up methods of finding food. The truth is that most people who are lost are usually found within 3 days. Food should definately be your last priority. You do not want to spend more energy finding food than you will get from the food. You must conserve energy, you will want to stay in one spot, and you want to stay safe. If you are in a survival situation long enough to need food, your thoughts can then turn to finding something to eat. Unless you are an expert on local plants, do not eat them. You could easily die not knowing what is safe to eat. You also do not want to spend time and energy hunting animals far away from your campsite. Considering that you want to conserve energy, the ideal method is to create snares and traps to catch small animals such as rabbits. While the chances of catching one is slim,(unless you know how to do it right) remember that you don't need much food to stay alive.
We show you how to do that in

"The Ultimate Survival Guide"

One final note about wilderness survival: always take a map of the area along with you and tell someone where you are going and when you expect to return. This is the best guarantee that you will survive if you found yourself in a survival situation. Remember that preperation is the key! If no one knows that you are missing, then no one will be looking for you and your chances of bering found quickly are slim indeed!
