One of the very first items to insure survival is water procurement. Food and shelter are the next in line for determining whether a person lives or dies in a survival situation.

I am a private pilot and I know that survival skills are important to have. I often fly over large bodies of water and very isolated areas of land. I must always remember that I am in a piece of machinery that can have mechanical problems at any time that could possibly turn my day into a life or death situation at any moment.

I grew up in the country and I learned some useful tips and understood some very important skills at a very young age.

If I was lost in the wilderness and I needed to find water I would start out by heading east or west.

Rivers predominately run north and south so my chances of finding water are greatly increased by heading east or west.

I also know that water runs downhill, so I would be checking for low lying areas along the way. I would also be using the sun to help keep my directions on a true easterly or westerly course because..

Almost everyone that becomes lost or stranded in the wilderness tends to travel in circles.

I would DEFINITELY be sure if it were summer time that I had a large trash bag in my survival kit.
